Discipleship Journey 1-2-3-4: A Simple Framework for Lifelong Following of Jesus

The Discipleship Journey 1-2-3-4 provides an intentional, relationship-based approach to making disciples who can make disciples. This simple framework helps establish strong foundations while allowing the Holy Spirit to lead your discipling relationships.

The Framework

1 Lord - Learning to live with Jesus as the one Lord over your one life. The cross shapes this journey, moving you from sin to forgiveness, slavery to freedom, isolation to family, and insignificance to fulfillment.

2 Questions - Identifying "Kairos moments" where God is speaking and responding with: "What is God saying to me?" and "What will I do about it?" This creates a cycle of observe, reflect, discuss, plan, account, and act.

3 Dimensions - Balancing your relational priorities: UP (worship and intimacy with God), IN (community as extended family), and OUT (mission and service in the world).

4 Stages - Understanding the discipleship pathway from Excited Novice to Intuitive Disciple Maker, following Jesus' model: "I do, you watch. I do, you help. You do, I help. You do, I watch."

Three Thirds Meeting Format

Each gathering follows a structured 60-minute rhythm:

  • Look BACK (15 min): Check-in, prayer updates, and accountability

  • Look UP (30 min): Focus on one of the 1-2-3-4 elements, ending with the 2 Questions

  • Look FORWARD (15 min): Support, accountability, and prayer

This framework is designed to be memorable, transferable, and foundational for a lifetime of growing in Christ-like character while doing the things Jesus did. These things have to be fleshed out in relationship with someone who travels close enough to you to see how you do it, someone who stays with you long enough to process the trying and the failing, and someone who you are willing to cheer on as they grow in Christ.
